Florida in August
August brings peak summer intensity with breathtaking humidity, "air you can wear" some would say, and UV indexes off the charts.
By now, Florida runners will be acclimated to the heat, but miserable because of how long the summers feel. Many will take shelter on the treadmill, but the brave ones will still be out on the trails and road enhancing their summer running superpower. Summer suffering leads to fall PRs - that is, whenever fall decides to show itself which is still a couple months from now.
The race calendar is bleak in August. While many states are in their prime racing time, Florida is in a bit of an offseason. Getting up early offers no reprieve. Florida runners are faced with a challenge: beating the sun in the morning but dealing with the 100% humidity or hoping for clouds in the afternoon where temps are higher but the humidity has dropped (to a "comfortable" 70%) and possible a light breeze - but be sure to watch out for those afternoon storms that can bring torrential downpours and dangerous lightning.
Surviving August in Florida as an ultramarathoner comes with a badge of honor. And a hope that it only gets better (cooler) from here.
