Florida in May

May is Florida's transition into summer, for out-of-towners, it will feel much hotter than expected. Mornings can still be comfortable, but temperatures rise quickly after sunrise. Humidity increases throughout the month, and late-May races often see the first regular afternoon thunderstorms of the year.

Tips for Runners:

  • Expect a few abnormally hot days, it's harder since heat acclimation most likely hasn't been established yet

  • Pavement temperatures can exceed 120°F even when the air temperature is in the upper 80s.

  • May is often the last chance to chase a PR before summer temps

  • Runners from all over will converge in the Keys for the Keys 100 ultras. Plan your logistics early

Did You Know?

May is peak mating season for Florida alligators, causing them to become incredibly active and vocal, filling the swamps with deep, vibrating "bellows" that can shake the water.

Florida Nature Watch:

  • Wildflowers still blooming

  • Alligators very active

  • Gopher tortoises active

  • Peak of sea turtle nesting season across the coasts
