Florida in September

September is a strange month for Florida runners. Summer is still very much in charge, but there are finally signs that cooler weather is coming. The heat and humidity are still tough, especially during the day, but mornings are starting to feel a little better and the days are getting shorter.

For runners who survived June, July and August, September is the time to start looking ahead. Fall races are getting closer, training volume starts to pick back up and all those miserable summer miles are about to pay off. Just don't get too excited - Florida's version of fall is still a little ways away.

The race calendar also starts to wake back up in September, with more races returning as runners begin preparing for the busy fall and winter season. The hardest part may be remembering that just because it's September doesn't mean Florida got the memo that summer is over.

The month starts off with one of the hottest races on the calendar - The Pinellas Trail Challenge and ends with the Tick Tock Ultra and Wildcat Ultras where the weather can range from hot and sticky, to moderate with a cool start, a hurricane may have even rolled in.

Did You Know?

Florida has the longest coastline in the contiguous United States. With more than 8,400 miles of coastline, there's a lot of Florida to explore — from beaches and mangroves to springs and coastal trails.

Florida Wildlife Watch:

  • Migrating birds begin returning to Florida

  • Sea turtle nesting continues to October

  • Manatees are still widely dispersed in springs and waterways

  • Butterflies and other pollinators become more active
